Panjab Warriors Complete Historic Takeover of Morecambe FC
In a landmark moment for British football, Morecambe Football Club has been officially acquired by Panjab Warriors, a Sikh-led investment group, marking the first time a Punjabi/Sikh consortium has taken ownership of a professional English football club. The deal, finalized on August 17, 2025, after receiving clearance from the English Football League (EFL) in June, ends a tumultuous three-year period since the club was put up for sale by Bond Group Investments in September 2022.
The acquisition, brings renewed hope to Morecambe FC, which faced severe financial difficulties and relegation from League Two to the National League last season. The club was suspended by the National League, postponing their opening fixtures, and fears grew that Morecambe could face collapse, similar to Bury’s expulsion from the EFL in 2019. However, the National League lifted the suspension upon confirmation of the sale, allowing Morecambe to resume their season with a match against Altrincham on August 23, 2025.
The vision emphasizes sustainability, inclusivity, and community engagement, with plans to strengthen ties with local organizations and supporters’ groups like The Shrimps Trust. Gurpreet Singh stated, “This is more than a business venture; it’s a commitment to the fans, the town, and the future of Morecambe FC.” The group aims to preserve the club’s heritage while fostering long-term success both on and off the pitch.
The takeover has been met with widespread relief and optimism. The Shrimps Trust praised Panjab Warriors’ perseverance, noting the cultural significance of the deal and invoking the Punjabi term Chardi Kala—optimism in adversity. Local MP Lizzi Collinge and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also supported the process, with Collinge calling the resolution “a new era” for the club. Despite a remaining transfer embargo until outstanding debts are cleared, Morecambe FC now stands at the cusp of a revitalized future under its historic new ownership.
